Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
Any of the Mormons here know what's going on?
I was talking to my old man last night and in conversation he said that the Mormons in Utah were told to get serious about food storage. He lives in Utah and apparently his friends are stocking up lately. He said that they are upping it from a one year supply to several years supply. This has to have some serious implications for food prices if the true believers start buying like crazy. Disclosure: I own commodity investments (including grains and fertilizer shares/options). On a side note, Utah politicians are under the gun so to speak about non-residents coming to the state just to get CCW permits that are recognized in their home states. Sounds like that avenue could be closed off soon. |

I never prepared for y2k or anything else. I've done a lot of preps lately though, and will continue to do so. Somehow it's different now. I hope I end up looking stupid once everything blows over and I have all this crap stored at my place. It's better than the alternative. You can't truly be prepared for the worst. |
Re: Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
I'm also not a Mormon (LDS) but I thought some of you may be interested in reading this ....................... http://rationalmormonism.blogspot.com/
Guns and Butter A possible news item from next year: MORMON COUPLE INDICTED FOR FOOD HOARDINGActually, I copied this, with small changes, from a true news item published in 1918. As others have noted, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the food storage the latter-day saints have been told for so long to maintain may become vitally necessary to many of them in the near future. Beyond the obvious economic warning signs, the above story and other historical facts outline another important reason to be prepared: the federal government can and will remove our freedoms at the drop of a hat. The outcry against "hoarding" and the related act of "price gouging" in the wake of Hurricane Katrina make it painfully clear that the philosophical climate in the U.S. today would present little opposition to another Food Control Act. But beyond food storage, I would highly recommend that every functional family should be in possession of at least a few firearms in the coming months. The Supreme Court is expected to rule in District of Columbia vs. Heller, the case that challenges the D.C. gun ban. Best-case scenario: handguns are (legally) reintroduced to a city that desperately needs them. Worst-case: the Supreme Court decides that gun ownership is a "collective right," and cities around the country begin confiscation. If you've been paying attention, you should know that the fact that "collective right" is a contradiction in terms is not enough to guarantee the correct ruling. It should also be clear, even if the case is decided rightly, that eventual nationwide disarmament of the populace is almost inevitable. The tragic mistake that Dr. Nash made was to let it be known to someone outside his family that he had illegal quantities of food. Now, the time will come when, in order to live safely, we must break the law. Indeed, while We believe that governments were instituted of God for the benefit of man; and that he holds men accountable for their acts in relation to them, both in making laws and administering them, for the good and safety of society,it is also true that no government can exist in peace, except such laws are framed and held inviolate as will secure to each individual the free exercise of conscience, the right and control of property, and the protection of life(D&C 134:1-2). The conditions under which we are obliged to the government are given in even more clear language in verse 5: We believe that all men are bound to sustain and uphold the respective governments in which they reside, while protected in their inherent and inalienable rights by the laws of such governments...We will not long be protected in those rights, if it can even be said that we are now. So the time will come to ignore the law, but it would not be wise to provoke it. When prudence is again made illegal, be prudent in secret. When the gun registration lists are used as a guide for confiscation, do not register. When obedience is death, disobey and live. |

That food story sounds bogus. We have a 'Food Administration'? Since when??

Re: Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
Having a food storage is just common sense anyway. Anything can happen from another Great Depression or PAW or something less alarming like just getting laid off or being laid up with sickness or injury when there's no income for an extended period and money has to go for other things. I did find my old man's comments odd if not interesting for someone pushing his late 80s. There is a certain chill in the air isn't there?

Re: Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
I'm not a member, but the LDS deserves thanks from everybody for keeping this sensible practice going during 'the fat years' and for being kind enough to permit non members to order. I got my case of #10 cans of hard winter wheat very promptly.
Yes, it is Christian to be sharing and also if non members stock up then there will be less pressure to steal from LDS members, but I still appreciate the church selling to me. |

No anyone can order form the web site, but you need to come with a member to the storage centers because of tax libility reasons. Thank your star spangled government for that one.

Re: Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
Does anyone have a direct link to their food product page? I've searched all over their website and can't find it anymore. All I find is food storage info.

Re: Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
Based on hoards that I have seen, only crazy people hoard food. Sane people just keep extra food in the house. The difference is that the sane ones keep food they normally eat, while the crazy ones hoard food they have no idea how to eat. My sister, for example, hoarded hundreds of pounds of canned hard red winter wheat, but didn't have a flour mill. I wonder what she thought she was going to do with it? Some people may remember that other website, the one run by the fat guy with a garage full of hamburger helper but no hamburger. He eventually hauled it all to the dump. He couldn't eat it, couldn't sell it, couldn't even give it away. I wonder what he was thinking when he bought it? Just crazy, I guess.
Store what you eat. Eat what you store. Don't think of it as "hoarding", think of it as "stocking up at sale prices". |
Re: Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
Their order site was down for a little while, but seems to be back. I got 6 cases of wheat, in three different orders. The last one got back ordered for a little over one week, but it came.

Re: Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
Anyone know whats up with Walton Feed? I placed an order in mid to late June and never got it yet. I sent them an email about altering some of the order a couple weeks ago (wanted to cancel an item) and they never responded to it. I also sent an email about an unrelated question and never got a response on that either. They must be really busy?
Edit: I meant mid to late April, not June. |
Re: Mormons! What Gives on Food Storage Lately?
Big thanks to TechGuy for turning me on to the LDS folks. I have made a couple trips over the last 2 months to the MA distribution center.... the only one in the northeast... and it is within 30 min of my home!
I have differences with their religion, but that does not mean that we should not help each other. They are just regular folks... actually, a little better than regular. They are getting to know me and we get along fine. I think that as many people that can prepare now, the better it will be for everyone later. As for keeping the mouth shut... it is hard. You want to help others think about preps. The best way I have found is to test the waters. Talk around the issue and see how they respond. If they prefer to sleep, walk away. |
